Why a New Power-Up is Inevitable in Elbaph
Eiichiro Oda has a distinct rhythm when it comes to Luffy’s power-ups, and the narrative trends suggest Gear 5 isn't the finish line.
The Element of Surprise: Gear 4 (Dressrosa), Snakeman (Whole Cake Island), and Gear 5 (Wano) all debuted with very little direct foreshadowing. Oda loves dropping sudden, game-changing transformations when all hope seems lost.
Gear 5 Has Become "Base" Form: In Egghead and Elbaph, Luffy uses Gear 5 casually to fight minor threats, show off to allies like Bonney, or easily handle mid-tier opponents. In shonen writing, when an ultimate form becomes a casual tool, a new ceiling is about to be established.
The Unreliable Narrator: The biggest argument against Gear 6 is Luffy stating in Wano, "This is my peak!" However, Luffy has historically been wrong about his own limits and abilities he didn't even know his fruit was a Mythical Zoan for 1,043 chapters.
With Loki reportedly getting "cooked" in the One Piece 1181 leaks, Luffy will be the last line of defense against Imu. Given Imu's status as the absolute strongest in the verse, a standard Gear 5 fight simply won't cut it.
Decoding Imu's Powers: The Blueprint for Gear 6
To understand what Luffy’s new awakening will look like, we just have to look at Imu's dark counterpart abilities revealed in the recent chapters.
Imu's power fundamentally breaks the rules of standard Devil Fruits. From the Abyss Circle to turning Elbaph's inanimate objects evil, Imu operates on a god-like level.
Maki vs. Haki
The Japanese translations reveal a crucial detail: Imu's "Omens" are actually referred to as Maki. This implies a completely different, darker variation of Haki. To counter this, Luffy will likely need to tap into the deepest reserves of his own spirit, perhaps unlocking the exact frequency of Joyboy’s Advanced Haki that famously severed the Gorosei's summoning circles on Egghead.
Power Sharing: The Ultimate Sun God Ability
One of the most controversial but highly plausible theories is that Luffy’s new form will allow him to share his awakening with the Straw Hats. This mirrors concepts seen in other shonen (like Naruto's Chakra Cloaks). Here is how Luffy's new powers could perfectly parallel and counter Imu's:
| Power Aspect | Imu's Dark Awakening | Luffy's Theorized Gear 6 |
| Environmental Effect | Makes inanimate objects sing and turn evil. | Makes the environment completely jolly, free, and bouncy. |
| Aura & Appearance | Dark clouds with distinct, eerie eyes. | Evolved white clouds with new patterns; full-body tribal tattoos. |
| Subordinate Buffs | Grants "Omens" (Maki) to buff underlings. | Grants "Dreams" to buff allies, sharing the Sun God's freedom. |
| Area of Effect | Teleports via the Abyss Circle. | Emits Joyboy-level Haki to sever teleportation links and banish foes. |
How Chapter 1181 Sets Up the Climax
If the One Piece 1181 spoilers hold true and Loki falls to Imu, the stakes in Elbaph will reach their absolute peak. Imu is not physically present but is acting through the Abyss Circle. This means Luffy doesn't necessarily need to beat Imu in a physical brawl yet; he just needs the sheer Haki output to send Imu back to Mary Geoise.
An evolution into Gear 6 featuring new tattoos, uniquely patterned clouds, and the ability to share the Drums of Liberation with his crew would give Luffy the exact toolkit needed to overpower Imu's Maki and save the land of the giants.

About
One Piece Manga Online
One Piece (Japanese: ワンピース Hepburn:
Wan Pisu) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro
Oda. It has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine
since July 22, 1997, and has been collected into 94 tankobon volumes.
Enter Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy that defies your standard definition of a pirate. Rather than the popular persona of a wicked, hardened, toothless pirate who ransacks villages for fun, Luffy’s reason for being a pirate is one of pure wonder; the thought of an exciting adventure and meeting new and intriguing people, along with finding One Piece, are his reasons of becoming a pirate. Following in the footsteps of his childhood hero, Luffy and his crew travel across the Grand Line, experiencing crazy adventures, unveiling dark mysteries and battling strong enemies, all in order to reach One Piece.

Imu seems to be the peak antithesis of Luffy. At least based on these spoilers Imu doesn't come off as just some evil person but honestly thinks this way of doing things is the best for humanity.
ReplyDeleteAlso interesting commentary about humans seeking power and making contracts. Wonder if this is alluding to DFs themselves since those who want power eat them for a price. Now who is the DF power contract with? Is it with a literal devil inside the DF or is this actually a contract with whatever God/Devil Imu represents - hence why Imu has the power to create contracts directly with people to give them power for a price?
Interesting that Imu uses a sword. Will be interesting to see if he is a swordsman in the full sense of the word. And is this black bade a real one or just following the color motif of a demon.
Nothing has indicated Joyboy may be an ass.
ReplyDeleteAll we know is:
- lived 900 years ago
- first pirate
- wore a straw hat
- left the "one piece"
- left at least one poneglyph
- friends with Emet
- had Zunesha in his crew, who betrayed him and felt awful about it
- heavily implied to have had the nika fruit, which is worshipped by everyone in need, world over, with some hesitation by some giants
- known as a liberator (via nika?)
- maybe knew Imu?
If I had to guess they Joyboy and Imu were friends some 900 years ago, had a difference point of view - freedom vs control - imu and the 20 others ganged up, killed him, zunesha was complicit in some way. Most of the kings we've seen are just as big assholes as imu - probably thought the same thing and wanted control. Not hard to go that way.
There's lot of instances where former friends become mortal enemies... Obi-wan/Anakin, Charles Xavier/Magneto, Guts/Griffith, Edge Mavrick/Faize,
I personally wouldnt get carried away with Maki right now since it feels kind of sensationalist to have a villain's personal naming scheme upend everything.
ReplyDeleteFor example, the more I see of Imu's naming convention, it becomes more certain that the Gorosei have devil fruits and they just had their abilities introduced the way they did to follow their archaic way of referring to the powers.
For the other parts, I can offer some thoughts for the sake of discussion.
It was my opinion that Haki in Gear 4 is used specifically to further manipulate the fruit or further boost properties.
Now that we know that "mass manipulation" is what leads to temporary haki depletion, we know others can coat themselves with enough mass all at once to deplete themselves like Luffy. It is significant that this "mass control" is something we've only seen from Luffy in this generation.
With other characters, the others are probably coating their bodies in invisible CoA. So not sure how you would view that.
Smoker, otherwise, is a person who hardens his fist in order to make his fist launch stronger. Funny aside, both Smoker and Vergo knew how to turn their weapons black with armament.
Doflamingo imbues his strings with Haki, probably at all times, and uses them to overcome logia defenses.
And of course, we have the person who one-ups Luffy by design, Katakuri. Katakuri will readily arm his entire arm to counter Luffy. We've seen his block shaped Mochi arms clad in armament. We've seen his mochi mace clad in armament too. The most impressive thing about Katakuri is that he can coat mochi that isnt physically connected to his body with Haki! Like wow. We've never seen that from anyone else. Mochi just appears in the air, and from their, he can launch dozens of mochi fists. Seriously, if anyone can remind me if there is another character who manifests a floating object totally disconnected from the body and then conjures more that comes out armored, let me know. This application of an awakening was by far the coolest.
Moving on, it seems Haki is required in order to create the heat-based attacks.
For Katakuri to create his heated mochi, he was using an armament. This is noteworthy, since Luffy also has a heat attack, Red Hawk and that does require Haki. Doflamingo also has a heat attack. At this point, with the precedent that Luffy sets, I think it's impossible to have a heated attack without armament.
Regarding devils, there's a few interesting ways of looking at it.
With Smiles, we can say Zoans "devils" could be as simple as having spirits or genetic memory of an animal. Given the seraphims, we know that genes DO carry some sort of personality data. So a devil could just as easily be a "daemon" or a "deva" of the fruit.
With the seraphim, we'd have to ask if they have devils inside of them. Maybe not?
Thanks to Law, we know the devils are not welded to people's souls, with possible exception of Brook.
We also know that the control of the devil fruit power is entirely reliant on the mind/soul having experience with the fruit, as seen when Franky lost control when turning into Monster Point.
Honestly, the devils being the consciousness of the fruit itself would be fine.
I dont know either, and I dont know how other users view it, so I just put both of them there to give people the general idea.
ReplyDeleteAll I would be comfortable saying is that the soul probably contains the mind. But we can probably do some reasoning and you can disagree with any part.
Thanks to Brook, we know the shape of the soul and we know that the soul can be concious and have a mortal understanding and not an enlightened understanding (at least when tethered by the "devil" of the fruit), suggesting the mind is indeed in the soul during death in the one piece universe. Also we know the afterlife is real, so souls have to be real.
However, when Big Mom takes souls, she is able endow other things with conciousness, but these things do not seem to exhibit the personalities of other people. Exception is for her three main homies. What that tells us is the soul is where conciousness springs out from, but there can exist a soul state where a "soul" does not have a mind.
Meanwhile, Moria's shadows do famously impart personality data through the shadow. We don't know what that means. If we assume personality (ego) is seperate from soul, then okay... I guess.
More importantly, the zombies, like Ryoma, show that they hold no memories of their original self, indicating there's no other mechanism for a dead body to hold memory.
So, what can be said is that souls can carry a mind. A soul can exist without a mind, but once incarnated, will develop a new conciousness. Shadows carry personality imprint.
So back to Law. I guess I would say he swapped their souls. We don't know if a soul can have a mind ripped out from it and moved around.
For One Piece, we probably dont have to think too much about it. One last thing worth pointing out is that what Law swapped was their "hearts" which would imply its more soul than mind. But if you're someone that believes the seat of the mind is the heart, then alright. Nothing is resolved.
In the real world, I believe there is a school of thought that would divide up the bodies of a human such that the physical, emotional, mentals, and soul would be different bodies, and that would allow for a soul to switch with another and begin imprinting on the concious mind (ego).
I am glad to see that Imu and Joy Boy laughing together. That makes the Void Century war much more rational than emotional.
ReplyDeleteI have said before that AK from First World wanted to terraform the Earth to bring underground energy to surface level. They used slaves working underground and told them they would be freed when they reached the surface level and meet the sunlight - that is how First World slaves invented the Nika myth.
First World AK brought underground energy (deity of the Earth) to surface level (Sun God) making the two sovereign meet. This meeting resulted in First World collapse with giant explosion that created the Red Line and brought the world under giant smoke cloud. First World AK left the Earth for the Moon then came back thousands of years later to Earth after all Moon resources were used.
When Moon people came back to Earth during Second world they found out humanoid races that had their lineage factor alterated due to exposition to free energy for thousands of years. They studied it and invented a technology to alter lineage factor at will - Dream Fruit later renamed Devil Fruit by WG.
Joy Boy was a person from the AK revived in Second world when Moon people came back to Earth. He used Dream Fruit technology to create Nika fruit and decided to travel the world to discover Second world making friends along the way including Nerona Imu. After his "pirate trip" he made a plan to take the lead over AK and bring the underground energy to surface level. His plan included the use of Ancient weapons and his Nika DF to fulfil the AK initial dream without failure.
When the world was informed about Joy Boy’s project, some approved it and thought the AW and DF technology would make it successful and some rejected it saying it would bring the world to end. Those that sided with Joy Boy called him a God of Liberation, the others a God of Destruction.
This makes both the AK and allies and the 20 kingdoms war opponents without having any good and bad sides. However, 20 kingdoms used Uranus at end of Void Century to flood the planet and prevent Joy Boy from making underground energy reached surface level by adding a 200m layer to Second world ground level. Doing so they killed millions of people making the Nefertari who rejected this plan side with Joy Boy in secret.
20 kingdoms also became bad guys by destroying the Second World with a world flood that they considered a necessary loss to save humanity from total destruction had Joy Boy succeeded.
This world opposition between Joy Boy and WG will come back again because Joy Boy left Poneglyphs to guide to Ancient weapons and One Piece treasure to allow someone to fulfil his properly designed plan. Because there is a different risk approach about AK project, the world will be divided again between the WG and the Nika side generating a Third World war. WG is afraid of this war that will engulf the world because Void Century war was not black and white and world peoples will be divided when One Piece is found. This is why One Piece will generate a war and not a WG revolution.
Imu and Joyboy are like Jacob and The Man in Black from Lost talking about these deep ideas. Mass manipulation isn't what leads to Haki depletion.
ReplyDeleteUsing Haki is what leads to depletion.
You can use your Haki overtime until depletion or use it all in one go, and deplete it which is what Garp was talking about in God Valley.
Furthermore, unlike most people, Luffy's one of the few people if not only people besides Vergo who uses Haki all over his body for EXTENDED periods of time which is an inefficient use of Haki. This is why there's a time limit when Luffy uses Gear 4th.
It's literally no different to stamina, if you use your stamina, you're going to get exhausted. It's that straight forward. You can run a marathon and get depleted after 30 minutes, and you can sprint an exhaust your stamina in 15 seconds. They chose to sprint.
All Garp literally said and what he meant by mass was "use all Haki on this 1 attack". That's why they collapsed right after using the attack.
It's literally we need to use all our Haki together to attack in 1 go, otherwise if we conserve our Haki, we'll not be able to deal any damage individually whereas Rocks had his Haki amplified by Imu, he could handle the attacks of Roger and Garp individually, but unless they attacked him together with all their might... a battle of attrition or prolonged battle would inevitably lead to their defeat.
If Rock's Haki was a 5 - Roger & Garp were 3s. Individual 3s do nothing against a 5. By combining their entire Haki into 1, they overpowered Rock's Haki.
Mass is pretty much just using all of one's power in 1 attack in the context of God Valley.
This mass thing is nothing new.
People can get along, until they find out they have completely different philosophies or political views. People become enemies from within their own families or friend groups the moment they realise or learn of opinions, political leanings, etc.
ReplyDeletePeople have a lot in common in terms of their immediate interaction which is usually expressive of being caring, jovial and having a loving nature towards a person. But that nice person might have views that you think are completely immoral or reprehensible. There are people out here who might seem like the nicest people in the world, most charitable, and then you find out they're Nazis.
I'm sure people have had a friend who is nice, harmless, quiet, someone you wouldn't think twice could have a bad bone in their body. And then you learn something about them that takes you completely left field, and they see nothing completely wrong with their idea. They'll go out of their way to help you in a time of need, but same person could really be harbouring vile views.
It goes back as far as Water 7. The scholars at Ohara (Dr. Clover specifically) around chapter ~395 or there abouts said the Ancient Kingdom had a philosophy that the WG opposed. And it's clear the WG have always been dictatorship or as is the preferred phrase now - Dominion... whereas Joyboy/Ancient Kindom have always been about freedom, equality, unity - we see this in the fact Joyboy is allied with Fishman Island, Skypieas, Wano, Zou... all these different races (bar Wano) particularly Fishman Island who simply wanted to be recognised as people, and Joyboy's promise was he'd create a world where they didn't have to hide in the deep sea simply because the WG was racist and didn't view them as anything other than fish.
I literally said it's big deal because someone in Toei couldn't keep work related things to themselfs and feel the need to probably boast about what they work on. I mean I kinda understand because whoever you work as working on such huge and popular project like One Piece is GREAT honor but losing job and mayby even freedom over boasting isn't worth it. Ordinary person who just bought recent chapter and decided to share it with internet is WAY harder to find than one of Toei workers because that could be basicaly ANYONE and there probably are multiple of such leakers. Oda, his coworkers and publishing house can only control what's going on with chapters as long as they won't leave the shops. Like I said, what happen to copies of recent chapters later depends entirely on the kind of person who bought it. I don't think there's a whole lot they could do about it.
ReplyDeleteIf the One Piece was really that super duper powerful/important/etc then why wouldn't Imu have taken it already?
ReplyDeleteLaugh Tale, as it implies, is going to be a huge sign "Congrats." It's the journey, not the end, after all.
Oh damn that reminds me, what was up with that giant egg on Roger's ship?
I think a lot of us figured that Joyboy and Imu had some type of friendship. Imu still has his straw hat.
Has it ever been explicitly stated that Mihawk DOESN'T have a devil fruit?
One Piece is not some "congrats, it's the journey".
ReplyDeletePeople will disagree because it's not a cool - everyone (for the most part) always wants this edgy cool idea that even they themselves can't even qualify or explain... it's just this arbitrary idea that can't be something simple.
If something is simple, people automatically assume it's trash unless it's super complicated to the point that even they themselves don't understand it... but that somehow makes it cool and awesome.
Imu can't take the One Piece because the One Piece is a cover up. One Piece is literally a group of Poneglyphs that detail the history of the world.
Everything the WG has done has 1 common point - it's always about controlling information.
They wiped out Ohara - a country of researchers for trying to finding out the Void Century... okay they want to find out information, so what? They destroyed an entire nation for that sole reason.
They gave an 8 year old a first bounty of 79m... 8 YEARS OLD.... Even Luffy didn't get a bounty that high... he had to first defeat Captain Kuri, Arlong, Krieg & Crocodile to get close to that. Even Big Mom as a child with all her strength who was actually capable of destroying battleships had to commit several crimes to even acquire a 50m bountyiirc. 79m in 1 go and as a first bounty is beyond insane.
They put Who's Who in prison for life simply for having information of the word "Nika"... and the journey to Wano by CP0 was partly to also kill Whos Who.
Egg Head... the Gorosei rather than ALL fight against Luffy... they still split up their strength to find the Transponder that was going to give information from Ohara... again Ohara comes back to bite in the back.
The WG hides the fact that there is a real 1 king, and the world is not a democracy.
One Piece details the fact that the WG had to cover up 100 years worth of crimes against humanity/world in order to become the WG that everyone trusts. There are over 170 nations that are allied with the WG.
If the world finds out:
The WG actually is a dictatorship and their political standing has no value, and that there is an actual king of the world.
The WG has lied for 800 years in order to form this alliance of 170+ nations.
The reason the WG's feigns democracy is they're buying time up until they are able to reliably possess an Ancient Weapon they can use at will to control every and anyone who opposes them. Right now, they're pretty much just pretending to be friends with all these nations so it is easier to stab them in the back once they gain the power they need.
The WG would lose everything. They'd lose their heavenly tax. They'd lose their vast army. They'd lose everything. These mofos are already starving because some Revolutionary thingibob who are barely an Army have cut off their gondolas and they're now almost starving... if one RA can fuck up the WG to the point Imu has to go to Elbaph... if the entire world realises the WG are liars... they're done for.
One Piece is about covering up 100 years of critical information that would literally destroy their organisation and get them out of power. Joyboy had Poneglyphs created with all the information, hid them in Laughtale.... and Imu who knows the Void Century simply wants to destroy the only thing that records this knowledge, but can't get hands on it because it is hidden... and only those related to the D. can find it.
One Piece is not about some friendship journey.
An Example would be - Pretty much everyone trusts the bank.
Until it turns out there is some reveal that the bank actually have a plan to hold all your money, and they only let you have access if you do as your government tells you to do.
If this was the bank's intention, they'd hide this information at all cost, no matter how small.
This is pretty much what the One Piece is - hide information, build trust, acquire Ancient Weapon, then force the world into slavery. This is easier done by making these future slaves your allies and dependent on you. Much more difficult if you're enemies to begin with.
The Void Century is a 100 year period that the WG (20 Kingdoms) did some heinous things.
ReplyDeleteThey covered it up and became what is now the WG which is the merging of the 20 Kingdoms that rule the world... and are known as Celestial Dragons.
Joyboy fought against these 20 Kingdoms, he lost the battle, and in order to make sure the war wasn't lost... he had Poneglyphs created and scattered all over the world to lead the chosen person to Laughtale to find out the true history, tell the world the WG are lying to them, and then team up to ultimately defeat Imu and the WG once the truth was revealed.
The WG covered it up, and Joyboy is trying to reveal this to the world through people like Roger who gave more eyes to these Poneglyphs. There are 13 Poneglyphs that can only be found in Laughtale.. and that's what Roger called One Piece.
Roger's a genius in the sense that people think it's just money and wealth which is what Pirates usually want, he's been ambiguous about what it is. By making people interested in the One Piece, more people became Pirates simply because they believe it is the greatest treasure in the world.
Prior to Roger, not many Pirates were being produced and were looking for the One Piece.
After Roger died and announced his treasure, that's when the Pirate Age was born because now, many people became Pirates.
This is why if you read chapter 0 or you read Big Mom's defeat, they curse Roger for giving the One Piece more attention meaning not only are they looking for One Piece, but so are many other people.
This is why the WG even had to employ Pirates (Shichibukai) as a method to fight against Pirates.
There's a lot of things going on behind the scenes.
Yeah, you would assume that since Shamrock and Shanks are twins they are completly equal in power BUT Shamrock is HOLY KNIGHT. We know how they are: seem basicaly untouchable and overpowered, until you find a way how to deal with their regeneration. Then they aren't shit because somehow their regeneration makes them soo fragile that theoretically paper cut could kill them and I bet Shamrock isn't much diffrent. Mayby bit stronger than your everyday Knight due to fact he's captain but Shanks could be WAY more powerful because he get all his stranght WITHOUT depending on Imu. So yeah, since Loki is such beast Shamrock deffinetly would be wrecked by him if not for those chains.
ReplyDeleteOk, calm down. This stab wound didn't phased him much so he should be fine, more or less. *Sigh*, so it wasn't going THAT well for our prince. Well I kinda expected that but at least Loki sended Imu flying by the end, though I don't think it did much to him. Also it's actually really cool that Loki STILL wasn't converted into demon despit fact that Imu is much stronger without using any proxy and at moment of stabing him he deffinetly tried to create opening to use domi reversi. Also what about this "Imu changing size" thing? To me he look the same, not even close to Lokis hight. Eh, guess it was part of "the joke" leaker made. Anyway, as someone who dosen't want another grand escape after what happened by the end of Egghead this chapter is bit nerve wracking for me. Oh, and in that tiny flashback Imu have he still look like his usual shadowy figure. Guess we may not see his current form again after he inevitably goes back to Marie Geoise. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised, this isn't his basic form so technically he still wasn't fully revealed and will deffinetly go back to what he usually is.
Btw, side note. I don't actually like Imus design much. His outfit seem bit too busy and his face despit fact that it look good up close is basically constructed in a way that makes him look ugly when he move around.
People talking about Mihawk, it's getting more likely by the day they're related somehow.
ReplyDeleteAnother interesting parallel between them: Imu wants absolute domination over people. Meanwhile Mihawk doesn't want to rule over anybody at all, to the point of not even having a crew. In that sense he is far less of a ruler than even Luffy, who still is the captain of a crew and a fleet, though still giving them maximum freedom.
