Shinichiro Watanabe, MAPPA's Lazarus Anime Trailer

During the "Toonami on the Green" event at Comic-Con International, Adult Swim Festival premiered the trailer for "Lazarus" (known as "Lazaro" in Japanese), an original anime series set to air on Toonami. The project is a collaboration between the esteemed director Shinichiro Watanabe, known for his work on iconic anime like Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Space Dandy, and the renowned animation studio MAPPA, responsible for hits like Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Attack on Titan The Final Season. At the event, Shinichiro Watanabe made a special appearance and offered a sneak peek of the character designs and imageboard art for the upcoming anime. The production team is aiming to complete the project by 2024, but no specific release window was confirmed.

Jason DeMarco, Senior Vice President and head of anime and action series at Adult Swim, confirmed that Watanabe will be directing every episode of "Lazarus." Adding to the project's appeal, action sequences will be designed by Chad Stahelski, the renowned stuntman and director known for his work on the John Wick film series. The anime's soundtrack will be crafted by jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington, with contributions from producers, DJs, and musicians Floating Points and Bonobo. The anime is being produced by Sola Entertainment.

The storyline is set in the year 2052, a time of peace and prosperity worldwide, thanks to a miraculous cure-all drug called Hapuna, developed by Nobel Prize-winning neuroscientist Dr. Skinner. However, just as the drug gains widespread use, Dr. Skinner disappears. Three years later, he resurfaces with a dire announcement - Hapuna has a short half-life, and those who have taken it will die within three years. In response to this impending crisis, a special task force called "Lazarus" is assembled, comprising five agents from different corners of the world. Their mission is to find Dr. Skinner and develop a vaccine to save humanity from his apocalyptic plan. Shinichiro Watanabe's impressive portfolio includes directing and contributing to several acclaimed anime productions such as Cowboy Bebop, Macross Plus, Samurai Champloo, Space Dandy, Carole & Tuesday, and Terror in Resonance. Additionally, he directed the "Blade Runner: Black Out 2022" anime short, and his film "A Girl Meets a Boy and a Robot" screened at the 26th Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal, Canada, in July 2022. With such a talented team and an intriguing storyline, "Lazarus" promises to be a highly anticipated addition to the world of anime.
