The X-Men Are Coming to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday

Marvel just dropped another teaser for Avengers: Doomsday, and this time it's all about the X-Men making their long-awaited MCU debut.

The trailer opens with a haunting tour through a destroyed X-Mansion while Magneto's voice echoes through the ruins. Ian McKellen returns as the master of magnetism, musing about what really matters at the end of everything. According to him, it's not about when or how death comes it's about who you are in those final moments.

We then see an older Magneto and Professor Xavier sharing what looks like a bittersweet farewell. There's something deeply moving about watching these two old friends, once enemies, sitting together as the world falls apart around them. The trailer builds to an intense climax where Cyclops, surrounded by fire and falling ash, rips off his visor and unleashes his optic blast at some unseen threat.

This is the third weekly teaser Marvel's released, each spotlighting different heroes joining the fight against Doctor Doom. Chris Evans showed up in the first one as Steve Rogers coming out of retirement, while the second featured Thor having a heart-to-heart with his deceased father Odin. Now we're finally getting our first real glimpse of the mutants.

Who's Returning?

The X-Men roster for Doomsday is shaping up nicely. Kelsey Grammer's Beast is back after popping up in The Marvels' post-credits scene. Rebecca Romijn and Alan Cumming are reprising their roles as Mystique and Nightcrawler characters we haven't seen in ages. Channing Tatum's Gambit from Deadpool & Wolverine is also joining the party, though this will be his first time actually teaming up with the X-Men proper. There's buzz about Deadpool and Wolverine showing up too, but nothing's been confirmed yet.

Why This Feels Different

Here's what's exciting: Marvel seems to actually be treating these characters with respect. The old Fox movies had a weird aversion to putting the X-Men in their classic costumes, sticking them in generic black leather instead. This trailer shows off Professor X's proper comic book look and Cyclops in his iconic blue and yellow suit. Set photos suggest everyone's getting the comic-accurate treatment this time around, which honestly should have happened twenty years ago.

What makes Doomsday really special is that it's bringing together Marvel's three biggest superhero teams the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four in one movie for the first time ever. Before Disney bought Fox, legal issues made this impossible. Now fans are finally getting the team-up they've imagined since childhood.

A Proper Goodbye

This is probably the last hurrah for Fox's version of the X-Men. Marvel's planning a complete reboot for Phase 7, with a new X-Men film directed by Jake Schreier set for 2028. They might squeeze in one more appearance in 2027's Secret Wars, but Doomsday is essentially the farewell tour for these legacy characters.

Marvel's reportedly releasing a new teaser every week in theaters, each focusing on different cast members, with a full trailer coming in February. The X-Men are just the latest reveal, so there's probably more surprises on the way.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters December 18, 2026.
