Zoro and the Giants: Pure Chaos
The chapter opens with high-octane action. Seeing Zoro jump onto the heads of the giants to slash the Domi-Reversed enemies is exactly the kind of dynamic panelling we love to see. It’s classic swordsman flair.
However, the situation with Brogy and Dorry is... baffling? They face off against Zoro but end up hitting each other? The spoilers mention everyone is left in shock, and honestly, so am I. Is this a result of some external manipulation, or are the two captains just that out of sync right now? It adds a layer of confusion to the battlefield that I’m sure will be cleared up, but for now, it leaves the Straw Hats vulnerable.
The MVP: Brook’s Lore Drop
This is the meat of the chapter. For years, fans have complained that Brook doesn't get enough serious character work post-Thriller Bark. Well, Oda heard us.
We find out the true identity of Gunko. Brook calls her "Princess Shuri" (or Sherry) and notes her distinct features: blue hair and two-toned eyes. But the title he gives her sends chills down the spine: “The Father-Killing Princess.”
The revelation that the man she killed was Brook’s "Onjin" (benefactor) someone on the same level of importance as Shanks is to Luffy is massive. This recontextualizes Brook’s entire demeanor toward her. Seeing Gunko waver before Imu takes control again is heartbreaking. It confirms that the person inside is still fighting, but the puppeteering is too strong.
When Gunko screams at Brook to run away? That’s going to be the emotional peak of the episode when this gets animated.
The "New" Giant Warriors
We also get a great showcase of the younger giant generation. Gerd and Goldberg winding up for a combo attack was cool, but Road stepping in to make it a trio attack is great character work.
Road has been a bit of a wild card, so seeing him coordinate with the others for the "Three Generals… Roaring Nation!!!!" attack is satisfying. It parallels Dorry and Brogy’s classic "Hakoku" (Warrior Nation), symbolizing that the next generation of Elbaf warriors is ready to step up.
The Cliffhanger: Sommers’ "Oh Sh*t" Moment
The chapter ends on a disaster. The physics of One Piece are always chaotic, but this chain reaction is brutal. The "Mother MMA" falls onto Sommers, who deflects it only for it to land on the transport ship meant for the kid hostages.
The ship is destroyed. Sommers’ reaction simply “Oh shit…!!!” sums up the vibe perfectly. This raises the stakes instantly. If the escape route for the children is gone, the crew is backed into a corner. It turns a standard battle into a rescue crisis.
Final Verdict
Chapter 1173 balances the "Warriors" theme perfectly. We see the physical warriors (Zoro, Giants) and the emotional warriors (Brook facing his past).
The Good: Brook’s backstory expansion is top-tier. The "Three Generals" attack looks amazing.
The Bad: The Brogy/Dorry friendly fire feels a bit goofy amidst the serious tone, but I'll wait for context.
The Ugly: That ending. The destruction of the transport ship is going to cause major panic in 1174.
Rating: 9/10 – A heavy hitting chapter that finally gives the Soul King the respect he deserves.

So Zoro did use his head to think of a way to not get between them by using their heads.
Interesting to learn about Gunko's past. Wonder how she ended up in Marijeose since they seem selective about the people they have join the Gods Knights/CD. Maybe the Kingdom Brook comes from is actually an important one and not some small nation. Also good to know her eye colors have nothing to do with Imu and its just her natural appearance. Curious why she killed her father but I'm sure we'll learn that soon.
Sommers is just ridiculous. He effed up bad and now they have no way of winning without outright defeating all opponents including the SHs. Honestly think he is the one who will die this arc whether its by getting defeated or Imu taking back the contract.
So it looks like zoro simply bamboozles dory and brogy into hitting each other... Not very strategic but still useful. I suppose dory and brogy's instinct to fight one another could have played a role here. It'd be quite fitting if giant's warrior nature is enough to make even imu's control over to be.. flimsy.
So sommers really screws up here. As mentioned earlier destroying the ship is a mayor hindrance to him. I hope we get to see more of a serious side to him before imu saturns him. For the plan to be viable saturn needs another boat that is able to make the trip to mary geoise. I suppose maybe this isn't entirely sommer's fault but I still wouldn't be too surprised if in imu's eyes sommer's record isn't exactly stellar.
Zoro’s idea was to slash Domi and reverse the giants what else would you expect from him?
As for Dorry and Brogy… yeah, they ended up hitting each other. Old habits die hard, I guess.
Anyway, turns out Gunko is a princess and not just any princess, but a “king-killing” princess. That definitely raises some questions. I’m really curious about what happened to her and whether it’s a similar situation to Loki’s. That said, I’m not ready for another long flashback right after the last one just ended, so I really hope it either happens later or stays short.
I’m also wondering what kind of relationship Brook had with Gunko, since he managed to get through to her so easily. She clearly wasn’t his daughter—she’s a princess—so maybe it was something more like the relationship between Pell and Vivi? That feels more plausible.
And yeah, besides the fact that Vivi is the princess of Alabasta, Imu really seems to have a thing for “collecting” princesses, especially if one of his or her knights was also a princess. I don’t have enough evidence to fully back that up yet, but honestly… I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be true. Imu just feels like that kind of person.
Im impressed by the Love Gunko´s is feeling about Brook...i mean even not even being controlled or totally possesed..she seems to have never EVER.. seems to go against imu´s sama wishes, but now she is literally screaming at him to move away.. even when he is an enemy and clearly is part of a Yonko Crew, fighting against Imu´s itself...i would love to see those together at some point,, but all this smell to Drama and Tragedy,, one of them is not goin to make it out of Elbaph alive.. is like if every moment she is awake, she dont care a fk anymore Imu´s or the mission... in fact she was running away towards him the first time she get possesed..
Ah, ok I forgot that Zoro was in Underworld with Sanji, Chopper and Luffy and don't know that on top of taking control over Dorry and Brogy and turning them into demons Imu gave them immortality (well, at least as long as they are domi reversed) so no wonder Zoro was shocked when they cut each other in half. He probably thought at that moment they will die. Well, he will be even more shock if they won't. Also Iike how Gunkos feelings for Brook are strong enough to undo her skill and free everyone beside Robin who got restrained by Sommers. Btw yeah, Sommers is about to get hit by rude awakening about why he shouldn't have hurt a lady. Because if he get Sanji angry enough probably even immortality won't save him. Well, sucks to be him I guess.
So Gunko really were "adopted" into the Manmeyer family. Theories that there are more Gunkos get stronger. Still suprised it was "allowed" even if it was the words of the Highest Order. Glad to see that Summers got humiliated again and the Three Giants did something awesome. But Oda is still not respecting Hajudrin. But if the spoiler is true that only Robin is still caputred by Summers powes then yes, the set up against him with Sanji is just to perfect now.
Now, all we need to know now, is why teh "Gunko" has not aged. Is it a contract, is it because she was frozen solid over the years or something else.
That would be the exact reverse situation where Robin came to rescue Sanji who was tied. Adding, Love, thorns, and power increase. That all sounds like a too good set up to have a great fight to be true. I do not want to get my hopes high, too often in the past years, Oda wrote great set ups when the delivery was disappointing.
Gunko's complexity and depth are becoming increasingly interesting. I always believed she was high-ranking—and I was disappointed when it was revealed she only had the 1st mark—however, she still seems different from the others.
Remote Possession: Even though she is a Vassal Blade, Imu can possess her body from a distance, which is the exact opposite of what Shanks told us.
Proximity to Imu: Even though Harald was a Blade for a time, he had never stood before Imu, whereas Gunko literally never leaves his side.
Combat Prowess: Gunko seems much stronger than her peers in a 1v1—even when compared to higher-ranking Knights like Sommers and Killingham.
This leads me to speculate once again on my old theory: The Wives of Mariejois.
We know that Bonney's mother was captured by order of the Holy Knights/Nobles to be the 7th or 8th Wife of M.G. I strongly believe that this title is separate from the Holy Knights; I don't think it's just a title for any random wife of any Celestial Dragon.
I believe Imu has been capturing women over the decades to try and produce a child or a perfect vessel for his body. I seriously think that because he is so powerful, he is cursed to remain at the top of Pangaea and can only leave through intermediaries. Rare diseases, like the one Bonney had, might be a side effect of prolonged exposure to his presence—and the "Wives of M.G." would be the only ones capable of tolerating it for long. Bonney's mother was discarded because she didn't prove strong enough—and due to the age and context, she wasn't "adopted" like Gunko.
Yes, my hypothesis revolves around this: a personal group of "Ladies-in-Waiting" for Imu (or actual wives in every sense, which would explain Gunko’s design).
But this also opens up the possibility that Imu is currently in the body of a woman. If they are Ladies-in-Waiting—which is what it looks like in Chapter 1158—it fits, because Ladies-in-Waiting were exclusive to Queens in the aristocracy, serving as an official, paid position in historical courts.
Gunko’s backstory is just a device for Oda to nerf Imu enough for Luffy & Loki to deal with him/her. Brook is the only character that Oda didn’t expand on in terms of background beyond the Laboon saga and him having been a royal guard, so it was convenient.
Basically, Oda didn’t plan that far ahead for this.
So, I was thinking and honestly I agree with person who said that this thing with Gunko and Brook came out of nowhere. I mean, I don't hate it but I would appreciate if there was some forshadowing that Brook could have some ties to someone beside his captain, espesially someone from royality. You know, because to this point we knew about Laboon, his crew, how Brook and his whole crew died and how he got stuck in Florian Triangle all alone some time after he got resurected by his df but absolutly nothing about what happened before. Not even a clue. It kinda sucks and since this really came out of nowhere Brook and Gunko will probably get flashback as long as Loki did. Anyway well, things start to seem like all bad things in the world can be traced to Imu. First Loki who had to kill his father because Imu took over and now Gunko or rather Princess Shuri who got labeled as "Father Killing princess" but outside of Imu control dosen't seem like person who could do something like that. One more case and this will turn into pattern that may confirm that Imu is behind tragedies of many kingdoms and random people. Also honestly seeing minion of big bad baddie messing things up due to his own stupidity brings me joy. Espesially if that minion is arogant ass just like Sommers. Just last chapter he was all smug like all was said and done and there's nothing anyone could do about it but here we see him ruining part of Imus plan because he just couldn't affort to think for a second. It's honestly hilarious.
