"With Pride"

★★★★★  Essential

There are chapters of One Piece that move the plot forward. And then there are chapters that remind you exactly why you've been reading this manga for decades. Chapter 1,176 is firmly, delightfully, the latter.

The mechanics of Elbaph are getting wonderfully weird. The "Domi Reversed" state is fascinating, but the cure is metal as hell: Dorry and Brogy literally having to decapitate each other to "flip" back to their normal, fully recovered selves.

One Piece Manga 1176 Review

This sets up the ultimate punchline for the final double spread. Zoro, Hajrudin, Stansen, and the Elbaph veterans realize that to "save" the other Domi Reversed giants, they have to inflict lethal damage. This is the exact excuse a bloodthirsty fighter like Zoro loves to hear.

"Slicing off their heads... digging out their hearts... We can't do that..."

The visual of Zoro and the giants grinning malevolently while sarcastically pretending they are "reluctant" to go all out is prime Oda humor. They don't have to hold back, and they are thrilled about it.

Franky’s "Super Heavy Cola" Era: Uncapped Potential

Franky has always been a heavy hitter, but his biggest weakness has consistently been his fuel tank. Once he runs out of cola, his hair goes flat, and he loses his firepower. Lilith’s OmniDrain Converter (ODC) completely rewrites his power scaling.

Here is how this upgrade shifts his fighting style:

  • Infinite Ammo Glitch: Franky is no longer limited by the physical bottles of cola stored in his fridge. If the ODC can convert environmental energy (like the heat from the burning school) into fuel, Franky can literally recharge mid-fight by absorbing his surroundings.

  • Environmental Utility: The Straw Hats often deal with environmental hazards (fires, freezing gas, falling debris). Franky is now a walking hazard-mitigation unit. He can put out fires just by eating the heat.

  • Heavier Brawling: We all love the "Radical Beam," but Franky’s physical brawling has taken a backseat lately. The new attack "Strong Dexter" suggests that "Super Heavy Cola" increases the sheer kinetic density of his physical blows. We might see a return to the gritty, close-quarters boxing style he used back in Water 7, but scaled up for New World giants.

The "Domi Reversed" Lore: Oda's Bloody Loophole

The mechanics of "Domi Reversed" are easily one of the most fascinating things Oda has introduced recently, both for the lore and the actual artwork.

  • The Ultimate Loophole for Brutality: Oda usually avoids having the Straw Hats explicitly murder their opponents, especially allies who are mind-controlled or cursed. But this rule? Lethal damage equals healing? That is a genius loophole. It allows Oda to draw some of the most gruesome, visceral, and high-octane combat panels of the series. We get to see Zoro actually slice heads off and Hajrudin crush spines, all guilt-free.

  • The Imu Connection: The spoiler mentioned this works "like when Imu used Domi Reversi but in the other way." This is the real smoking gun. If the curse/magic affecting Elbaph is mechanically linked to Imu's powers, it means Elbaph isn't just a side adventure it's directly tied to the Void Century and the World Government's highest authority. It implies Imu's power might revolve around reversing states of reality, life, and death.

  • Giant Resiliency: The fact that Dorry and Brogy casually chopped each other's heads off to "reset" shows how insanely hardcore the Elbaph warriors are. It cements why the Giant Pirates were the most feared crew in the world; their battle culture is simply built different.

This chapter sets up the rest of Elbaph to be a chaotic, high-energy bloodbath, with major lore drops sprinkled in between.

The Verdict

"Full of Pride" delivers on action, lore, and crew dynamics. It gives the spotlight to characters who needed a good flex (Franky and Jinbe), reminds us of Sanji's fierce loyalty, and sets up a chaotic bloodbath for Zoro. The only downside is the most devastating three words in manga at the very end: BREAK next week.

Lilith, Franky, and the OmniDrain Converter

The chapter's first major beat belongs to science. Lilith pulls out something she calls the OmniDrain Converter  the ODC from Vegapunk's bag of tricks. In simple terms, it's a machine that harvests ambient energy, and Elbaph just so happens to be absolutely overflowing with it. Clever worldbuilding. Oda's been seeding the idea that different islands have unique elemental characteristics, and this pays off immediately.

What makes this scene genuinely funny is Lilith's reaction to Franky. She looks at this man a cyborg with a Pacifista-class body  and cannot believe he's been running on cola this whole time. Not some refined energy source, not something exotic. Cola. The look on her face presumably says it all. Franky has always been lovably lo-fi in that regard, and the upgrade that follows (courtesy of "super heavy cola" extracted from all that heat energy) is earned through comedy first, which makes the payoff land even harder later.

Sanji Steps Up, and the Double Page Delivers

On the battlefield side of things, Nami tries to use Zeus to deal with the school fire, but Killingham isn't having it he sics the MMA lindworm on Zeus and things get complicated fast. Enter Lilith, who uses the ODC to simply vacuum all the heat out of the area, freezing both the school and library solid in one go. Efficient. Cold. Literally.

Then Killingham makes a critical error. He insults Jinbe for being a fishman. You can practically feel the temperature in the room drop again this time for different reasons because Sanji materializes in front of him like a debt collector. There's no speech, no monologue. Just Sanji, standing there, making clear that talking about his nakama that way has consequences.

Jinbe | Vagabond Drill

A classic technique deployed at just the right moment. Jinbe's martial precision cutting through the chaos like it always does.

Franky | Strong Dexter

Brand new punch attack, powered by super heavy cola. The naming is peak Franky energy, and the execution is appropriately devastating.

Sanji | Concassé on Killingham

Brutal. Clean. Deserved. A culinary term turned lethal technique, applied to a man who absolutely had it coming. The double page where all three happen simultaneously is the kind of spread you screenshot and send to your group chat immediately.

Three Straw Hats. Three attacks. One double page. Oda doesn't give you time to breathe he just keeps stacking the greatness.

On that first big double page spread

The Final Page That Made Everyone Lose Their Minds

Now here's where the chapter shifts from "great" to "I need to talk about this with everyone I know." The Domi Reversed Dorry and Brogy moment is quietly one of the most emotionally effective beats Oda has pulled in a while. They say their goodbyes to each other, they cut off each other's heads and then, like flipping a coin back over, their bodies reverse. They come back. Fully recovered. Whatever Imu's dark power did to them, the mechanism works both ways. You can undo it. The giants are back.

But the real magic is the final double page. Zoro, Dorry, Brogy, Hajrudin, and Stansen, standing together, staring down a field of Domi Reversed giants. And then comes the information that changes everything: killing them properly killing them snaps them out of the transformation. Their bodies flip back. No permanent damage. Which means...

Final Page — The Chapter Closer

STANSEN "Dying once would end their demonic transformation!!!"
BROGY "Even if they become a ruined corpse, once flipped over they'd be as good as new!!"
ZORO "So we can just go for it?"
HAJRUDIN "No need for holding back!! It would appear that if we inflict enough damage to kill them, they'd be back to normal!!"
DORRY "Slicing off their heads... digging out their hearts..."

And then they all grin. That unhinged, barely-contained, absolutely feral grin that you only see when a group of extremely powerful people have just been told there are zero consequences to going all out. Zoro's reaction especially "So we can just go for it?"   is such a perfectly Zoro response that it's almost poetic. The man has been waiting for a reason to stop holding back. He just got it.

The chapter ends before they do anything. Of course it does. Because sometimes the anticipation IS the chapter.

9.5 out of 10

Verdict: Full of Pride, Full of Everything

The chapter title earns itself on multiple levels. Sanji's pride in his nakama. Franky finally getting an upgrade worthy of his engineering. Dorry and Brogy's pride in each other. And that closing image five absolute monsters grinning because they've been given permission to be exactly what they are. This is One Piece operating at full confidence. It balances action, comedy, world-building, and heart effortlessly, and sends you into the break week on a high that's genuinely hard to shake. The break next week is going to feel very, very long.

Harald wasn’t Domi Reversi.

As for Rocks he didn’t die from Domi Reversi being turned off but from Garling’s attack, however he indeed didn’t regenerate when Domi Reversi was turned off. The only rationale explanation I can find is that Garp and Roger didn’t kill Domi Reversi Rocks with their single combined attack (as he was too strong) so he couldn’t be freed in full health under the Domi Reversi cancellation rule.

Then why Rocks didn’t recover under the Reversi control like for the other attacks? Because Garp and Roger combined all-in Haoushoku Haki attacks that cancelled both the DF control and regeneration powers while damaging Rocks body.

Rocks suffered the same general DF cancellation principle than Sommers with Scopper Gaban which works exactly like Law’s Haki blast that was used to cancel the Disease DF power of Doc Q. You can disrupt a DF power from impacting a specific body by injecting a huge quantity of Haki in said body.

In some cases it is used offensively in someone else’s body (Gaban, Garp and Roger with Haoushoku Haki) while in other cases it is used defensively in self body (Law turning back into man, Big and Kaido that can’t be moved by Law’s powers).

This Domi Reversi rule also implies that if Zoro had planned to kill the Domi Reversi giants with a single attack, they wouldn’t have recovered under Domi Reversi control but they would have been freed with full health (Domi Reversi constraint). So Domi Reversi control power wears off if someone is killed instantly (probably cut the soul connection), if not target simply recovers under the Domi Reversi control. That is probably why Oda made Zoro asked giants whether he can hurt (and not kill) the Domi Reversi giants.

By the way if someone finds a better rationale explanation for Rocks Domi Reversi outcome, please share.

Super Franky becomes even super-er, cool. So, i guess only other Domi Reversi-d characters can kill each other for the ressurection to work? We have to see more of this. Also, Killingham being disgusted by Jinbei, hmm, I'm pretty sure there is some fishman DNA, or Lineage Code, in him, with those sharp teeth and because how some of the previous Gods Knights looked, maybe he was taught to hide this from others and so maybe even hates that side of himself.

And here I thought the solution to Domi Reversi was going to be something unique to the Nika fruit (like a 'freedom reversi') as a juxtaposition between Imu and Nika, but nope, just punch them hard enough.

I don't know whether to be disappointed or glad that the solution didn't turn out to be more cartoon unfunny nonsense.

Well this turn of events is very bad for Imu's side. The dream monsters are getting crushed, Dorry and Brogy are back to their normal self, Killingham has to deal with Sanji, Jinbei and powered up Franky, the children are save, Sommers got crushed and is possibly already defeated.
Only Imu stands strong but got shortly overwhelmed by Gunko about Brook.

So the WG gets crushed in Elbaph in a very small time span. I wonder if Imu summons other holy knights to get help but well they are already busy somewhere else (My guess: Mary Geoise is attacked by BB)

And I wonder if Imu can controll more than just one person. If he/she is able to controll everyone that made a contract with him/her, then it could lead to mass controll of the holy knights (just a bit like Nagato in Naruto). But I bet this would be very taxing for Imu.

When someone gets Domi Reversi, he is turnt upside down and "comes back to the world" with a demonic body. This demonic body regenerates when it is hurt, however it seems it can be killed instantly thus not being able to regenerate.

My guess is that when it is killed instantly it losts all powers and connections to Imu so the victim comes back to his normal body with self control and full health. This seems to be Domi Reversi limitations that are inherent to the DF powers and have nothing to do with Haki. That is why Dorry and Broggy could kill themselves instantly and come back despite not having Haoushoku Haki.

On the other hand, God’s Knights powers are not received throught Domi Reversi so opponents have to work differently to bypass the DF regeneration and immortality powers they receive from Imu. This is when Haoushoku Haki comes to use to prevent the DF powers from working effectively into the God’s Knight bodies.

Haoushoku Haki blasts into God Knight’s body makes the active DF powers a bit ineffective

Body regeneration is stopped
However body doesn’t die right away from being damaged (Sommers survived from being unable to regenerate for a while)

As for the age immortality, it doesn’t seem to be impacted by Haoushoku Haki blasts so it makes me think it is a permanent body status coming from Imu. Imu probably received the Eternal Youth surgery and once done it is permanent despite DF user dying and DF powers not being used anymore. So If BB was using Kairoseki or his DF powers on Imu, he wouldn’t be able to use his powers but he would still be age immortal.

That being said, we still need to know how Harald died exactly. Does the body immortality (I mean not dying from being damaged) also wears off if body is too much damaged (Harald seems to have been split all around from Loki’s attacks) or damaged for too long without regeneration. For instance, let’s say GK can survive 2 minutes with a head cut in half and not regenerating. Imagine body regeneration is like getting fresh air while having a damaged body is like being underwater. Someone would die after being underwater without air for too long. Does this work the same with God’s Knights if they do not regenerate from normally dying wounds?

We really need to have a detailed HunterxHunter type explanation about the various DF powers received through affiliations with Imu.

Well, since Sommers was humbled last chapter seems like it's time for Killingham. I honestly didn't expected fire in library to be handled soo quickly. I thought Killingham, Sommers or even Gunko would try to stop our heroes from putting the fire out before they'll finally stop it. Also yeah, since Killingham is suspiciously similar to fishman fact that he hated on Jimbe soo hard feels really weird.

1. Is Oda becoming somewhat predictable now? Yes.
2. Are a lot of stuff solved via CoC cladding? Yes.
3. Am I still enjoying this manga more than any other manga I have ever enjoyed as well as being better than, in general, most of the media I consume and have consumed in mu lifetime? Damn fucking straight I am.

People, let's just enjoy this while we still can, plus the full chapter hasn't even released yet. I think many more than myself will be sad once this is all over. Glad 2025 wasn't the end of OP as predicted.

Its so wierd. Hope is brimming for the last coupel of chapters. So why do I feel so frustrated? No the kids actions were not bad and highly emotional, and summers getting squashed was satisfyng. And even now the fact sanji "Accidnetly" kciked of killinghams aur bubble just to teach him a lesson despite the fact he may not even like jinbei is great.
But its jsut...Everything seems to be going to well. Normally that is exactly how it should be. But I guess its just worrisome what kind of despair awaits. I suspected the dorry and broggy tried to kill each other but here I thought it was gonna be a heroic "Dying as yourselves" but tha did not happen. So dying in domi reveris reversi the domi? A lot of peole seem to wonder then how it came to be that xebec was so easily killed, the wounds are revived but they never said anything about fatigue. And besides garlings cowardly strike was just at xebec throat, he could nto have survived even if he still had haki.
Killingham is finally showing why he is scum, but its still wierd that oda is making sanji his target. Summers was a much better symbolic opponent.
And finallyt eh super cola, everyone suspected that wuld happen and not it has.

So that's what happened to xebec when he fought garp and roger. He got "Killed" and that turned him back to normal but fight exhausted him which left opening for garling the fraud to go for real kill. Hmm, that's actually really weird solution for "Domi reversi problem". Just kill domi reversed person and they not just go back to normal but also still live, ✨magic✨. Also that's just soo random, I would swear that luffy and his "Drums of liberation" will do the job. Hmm, mayby it did but not exactly in a way we thought. After all dorry and brogy did regained enough control to make their own decision to kill each other and that turned them normal. I wonder if they knew what will happen if they kill each other or it was just "Lucky guess". That's actually kinda interesting.

So basically Rocks crew let him down. Can compare to WCI with Luffy. Rocks could have still succeeded. Scopper and Rayleigh could have made the save too if they stayed around long enough. Makes Rocks story suck.
Hey guys not dead just need some help escaping.

Good testing ideas. When it comes to testing, we will also have to consider the fact that God’s Knights have affiliation powers that are transferred from Imu to them (these are not directly their own DF powers) so we should differentiate Imu and God’s Knights when it comes to DF power cancellation.

For instance for the age immortality, if it it is a permanent Eternal Youth Surgery done to Imu with a DF power in the past then it shouldn’t be cancelled with Haki / Kairouseri / Yami Yami no Mi because there is no active DF power involved anymore i.e. DF user died and DF power is no longer in use on Imu’s body - Imu’s body was modified and this is finished. It would be exactly like if Ace burnt a bush with his fire powers. If you come afterwards, you cannot cancel the burnt bushed event with Haki / Kairouseki / Yami Yami no Mi because DF power was used to burn the bush in the past.

However with the God’s Knight it should be different because they are getting their abilities through Imu’s DF hence there is an active DF user transferring the passive age immortality from Imu to them. So it may be possible to remove the passive age immortality from God’s Knights with some DF cancellation impacting the DF transfer ability of Imu.

Then for the active abilities coming directly from Imu’s DF such as expexted of demonic regenerations, there should be ways to cancel the ability without cancelling the DF transfer ability from Imu. You simply prevent the regeneration process to launch in God’s Knights by disrupting the power process with Haoushoku Haki.

I’ll be curious to see how this goes for the domi reversi group. On the one hand I think they’re plenty capable of killing these guys down if that’s what it comes down to for reversing the effect. On the other hand the enemy can convert you into their ally just by taking a flanking position. Can someone cured of domi reversi be put back under it this way? Who knows. Feel like it could go either way if anyone gets sloppy.

Really like the board game aspect of this, just flipping pieces back and forth until someone had total control of the board.

Finally Franky is getting an upgrade in his power source. Would have made more sense for it to have happened in Egghead but I guess its better late than never.

Also interesting that energy is just all around them in Elbaf. Wonder if this will boost Luffy in Nika form and if it relates to why Elbaf seems to be the home/origin of Nika.

Koro said...

I think its just a consequence of how hard it is to squeeze everything into one arc. Egghead in particular had an ascended level of developmental rushing that we never saw before in One Piece. But, engaging with the thought, The spot where it would have made the most sense for it to happen would have been offscreen, during the unknown period when Luffy and the rest neutralize York.
Of course, its possible Oda wasn't 100% sure of what form the upgrade for Franky should take.
In all honesty, the way it happens here also feels rushed, and that to me is indicative of the concept having not been fully formed years ago.

Megan Lee said...

Given that Oda needs to imperil the Straw Hats for his regular arc beats, indicating the need to have strawhats fighting from the bottom at some point, having Franky have this notion of a power-up but not really use it when he was already capable of beating VAs, just doesn't work well for the runaway setup of Egghead 2nd half.

Regarding the waste of time panels, I wager that sometimes those panels probably only exist specifically to fill out page space between bigger beats. So, under that line of thought, I feel like they're an in-the-moment thing that doesn't require thought. Slotting in the power-up and then having Franky use it without throwing off the dynamics could be a struggle. It's possible Franky would have to be positioned away with an enemy that can hold him in place the way Zoro V Lucci worked. Those are the kinds of ramifications the modification would make.
So, I think we will continue seeing those panels just because they're page filler.

In case its not clear, I agree with that final line and with the notion that it could have been fit into Egghead, on a length basis, if it was conceptualized.

What to say, amazing last page.
While I still stand on my sentiments regarding character development and such, all of these things aren't necessary to write a good story.
You don't need the best art, you don't need the best characters, you don't need the best development, you just need to write a story that people can enjoy, laugh and be entertained with, and that's what One Piece is to me.

Not to say the art isn't great, or there aren't amazing characters, but to say, having all the features doesn't make something good.
New phones can access the internet, can play games, has apps for any and all thing... but I'd still take a Nokia3210 over it (call it Nostalgia)... that's what One Piece is for me, it's just effective and good at what it offers, and that's an entertaining story.
Really fun chapter.
